I AM

I wrote this song with my brother, Joel, over Christmas break, 2003, just before he headed off to Texas to seminary. I was playing with a dark, minor chord progression when Joel said, “Keep playing that. I’m hearing some lyrics.” He sang the first twelve words to the song and we were off to the races.

Our goal was to paint a bleak picture of a man lost in his own created misery, then show him finding hope. The story was modeled after a friend of ours who had been through the mire and had found himself with nowhere to go. We fashioned the song with relation to the story of Elijah cowering in fear after humiliating the prophets of Baal.

The message is, we can build up our own walls and do a terrific job. The problem is that when we are the ones “building the house”, we often find that we have built ourselves into a prison of our own making and can’t find the way out. Time after time we read and hear testimony of those who have been in this situation and have heard that gentle whisper.

If you are in such a situation, listen closely. I pray that this song is an encouragement to many who are afraid to admit aloud that they feel forsaken by God and trapped by their “walls”. Feel free to express yourself screaming with the song as I often have and find your release in knowing that I AM is whispering a sweet melody for you.
