CONTRADICTION

Sometimes the Bible just doesn’t seem to make sense.

He who seeks to save his life will lose it but he who loses his life for my sake with save it…
Rejoice in your suffering…
What I want to do I don’t do, what I do I don’t want to do…

It is often beyond intellectual capacity to grasp exactly what the authors intended to communicate in these passages. What makes these nonsensical statements make sense? Shared experience.

We can all identify with Paul, doing what we don’t really want to do. We have all grown through our sufferings. And most believers know what it means to find real life in Christ by giving up your own.

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense until you are able to see through the eyes of the author. Sometimes it doesn’t fit together neatly until you are able to approach the passage from a new vantage point provided by (sometimes painful) experience. Sometimes our own life contradicts what should be reflected of our beliefs.

The first verse of this song was written during one of Dr. Wells’ Intro to Political Theory lectures (I can’t understand why I made a “C”). In the midst of studying Machiavelli, I began batting questions about meekness, humility, and how much sense it made to grow through suffering.

The second verse is my vain attempt at putting thoughts of justifying my own contradictions into alliteration. Said alliteration proved to be more difficult than I had envisioned, but the thought process proved valuable to me as a songwriter.
